Digital Equipment Corp. will release today a new version of AltaVista Mail server software that includes support for IMAP4 and modules that let users connect the software to LAN-based mail packages.
AltaVista Mail Server 97 can be combined with Digital's eXtensions for cc:Mail and Microsoft Corp.'s Mail to enable users of those programs to send and receive mail from the Internet by routing them through a standard post office box. The eXtensions include support for 250 POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) or Internet Mail Access Protocol 4 licenses.
Besides IMAP4, Mail Server 97 includes support for POP3, SMTP and Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions.
The products are shipping now. Pricing was not available from the Maynard, Mass., company.
